How we calculate

At national level, income tax in 2026 goes from 10% up to 37% on income over $640,600; employee contributions are counted separately, as is any local tax. A US passport keeps you inside the US tax net wherever you live: the IRS taxes citizens and resident aliens on worldwide income, from all sources. For 2026 the top federal rate is 37%, reached above $640,600 for a single filer and $768,700 for a joint return. Leaving the country does not end the filing duty, and only a formal loss of citizenship or long-term residence changes the picture. At $300,000 gross, net falls to $215,177, or 72%; at $500,000, to $340,477, or 68%. On $150,000 the country ranks 8 of 35 for cash in hand, before any special regime. The sums assume: Texas: no state or local income tax, federal tax and payroll contributions only. On safety, schools and health it scores 41 out of 100 among the countries covered. Next, in order, come 4 legal ways to cut the bill, the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion regime and what to check before you leave.

Foreign Earned Income Exclusion Open

Excludes foreign earned income from US income tax; it does not cover investment income

Who : US citizens and resident aliens with a foreign tax home who pass the bona fide residence test or spend 330 full days abroad in 12 consecutive months. Limit : $132,900 for tax year 2026. Source

Who is tax resident in the United States?

Citizens are always in scope. A foreign national becomes a resident alien through a green card or the substantial presence test: at least 31 days in the current year, and at least 183 days counting all current-year days, one third of the prior year and one sixth of the year before that. A closer connection to another country can rebut the day count.

The trap to know

Giving up citizenship is not a clean break. A net worth of $2 million, a high average income tax bill over the prior five years, or an inability to certify five years of compliance on Form 8854 makes someone a covered expatriate, which brings the expatriation tax into play.

Questions

How much is $150,000 after tax in the United States?

$113,791 a year, or $9,483 a month, for a single resident employee. Income tax comes to $24,734 and contributions to $11,475. At $300,000, the share you keep moves to 72%. Each month that leaves $9,483 of $12,500 gross. Regimes for new arrivals are not applied here.

What is the top income tax rate in the United States?

37% on the 2026 scale, above $640,600. At $150,000, each extra 1,000 leaves about $684 net. At $500,000 gross you would keep 68%. It only hits what exceeds the threshold, the rest of the salary following the lower bands, so your average rate stays well below it.

What gross salary leaves $171,000 net a year in the United States?

About $231,400 gross a year, or $19,283 a month, for a single resident employee, with no special regime taken into account. Tax and contributions then take 26% of gross. In a negotiation, start from this gross and add whatever the employer pays separately in kind.

Is the United States safe and expensive to live in?

The public figures on this page show 5.8 homicides per 100,000 people, a housing price level of 214.6 (world = 100) and a mean PISA score of 489. These values describe the whole country, not your street or your children’s school. Add 78.9 years of life expectancy and 7 µg/m³ of fine particles, both sourced further down the page.
