The national income tax scale for 2026 runs from 14% to 33%, the top rate starting above CA$258,482; contributions and any local taxes come on top. Leaving Canada is itself a taxable event: emigrants are treated as having sold shares and certain other property at fair market value on departure. The country has no special inbound regime, so residents rely on registered plans, led by an RRSP dollar limit of $33,810 for 2026. That limit will rise to $35,390 in 2027. At CA$420,000 gross, net falls to CA$235,901, or 56%; at CA$700,000, to CA$366,018, or 52%. On CA$210,000 the country ranks 19 of 35 for cash in hand, before any special regime. The sums assume: Ontario, where provincial income tax and the Ontario Health Premium come on top of federal tax. On safety, schools and health it scores 65 out of 100 among the countries covered. The page then sets out 3 legal ways to cut the bill, the lack of an open regime for new arrivals and the trap to know before leaving.

Cost of living in Canada
The consumer price level in Canada is 90.2 against 100 in the United States (World Bank, 2025), 10% below the United States. Among the 161 countries ranked from cheapest to dearest, that makes rank 144.
Among countries with a page here, it is cheaper than Sweden (90.5) and dearer than New Zealand (88.9). Scaled by these prices, the net average salary of $45,866 buys what $50,849 would buy in the United States, where that net is $70,018. The 2026 dollar limit is $7,000, and unused room carries forward. There is no deduction going in; growth and withdrawals are the benefit.

Who is tax resident in Canada?
Residence turns on ties, not a fixed day count. A home, a spouse or common-law partner and dependants in Canada almost always count as significant, while bank accounts, a driving licence or provincial health cover are secondary. Sojourning 183 days or more in a year without those ties can still make someone a deemed resident.
The trap to know
The departure tax creates a gain with no cash coming in. Anyone whose property is worth more than $25,000 on leaving must also file Form T1161 listing it, and a person who keeps significant ties in Canada while abroad remains a factual resident.
