How we calculate

Tax rates on the 2026 national scale climb from 12.5% to 48%, which applies above €86,634, before contributions and any local tax. Portugal repealed its non-habitual resident regime with effect from 1 January 2024, and those already registered simply run out their ten years. Its successor, IFICI, applies a 20% rate only to income from research, innovation and listed qualified roles. A retiree or passive investor arriving today therefore has no equivalent. At €270,000 gross, net falls to €132,586, or 49%; at €450,000, to €208,122, or 46%. On €130,000 the country ranks 33 of 35 for cash in hand, before any special regime. The sums assume: Mainland Portugal (the Azores and Madeira have their own rates). On safety, schools and health it scores 48 out of 100 among the countries covered. Further down you will find 4 legal ways to cut the bill, the IFICI (article 58-A, Tax Benefits Statute) regime and the mistake to avoid when you go.

Who is tax resident in Portugal?

Spending more than 183 days, consecutive or not, in any 12-month period starting or ending in the tax year makes someone resident. A home held in circumstances suggesting habitual residence does the same with fewer days. Any day including an overnight stay counts as a day of presence.

The trap to know

Portuguese nationals moving to a listed low-tax jurisdiction stay treated as residents for that year and four more, unless they show reasonable grounds such as temporary work there for a Portuguese employer. The year of departure can also be caught in full if more than 183 days were spent in Portugal.
