Life expectancy by country 2024

Monaco has the highest life expectancy at birth, 86.5 years in 2024, ahead of San Marino (85.8) and Hong Kong (85.4), according to the World Bank. Among countries with over a million people, Hong Kong leads at 85.4 years, ahead of Kuwait (84.6) and Switzerland (84.4). At the bottom of the 217 countries and territories, Nigeria stands at 54.6 years and Chad at 55.2. The figure does not predict how long a person will live: it says how many years a newborn would live if that year's death rates stayed frozen. A year of high infant mortality or crisis therefore weighs heavily. The comparison below sets two countries side by side for everyone, for women or for men, and the table gives all three columns.

The gap between women and men

Women live longer almost everywhere, but not by the same margin. The widest gap in the table is in Russia, at 10.6 years, and the narrowest in Togo, at 0.5. The United States stands at 81.4 years for women and 76.5 for men.

Income does not explain everything

Japan lives on average 5.1 years longer than the United States, at 84.0 against 78.9, on a clearly lower income per person. The small territories at the top have few people and an unusual population, so their figures are fragile. This site sets these data against tax and safety on each country page.

Questions

Which country has the longest life expectancy?

Monaco, at 86.5 years in 2024, but it is a very small territory. Among countries with over a million people, Hong Kong comes first with 85.4 years. These averages come from the World Bank, which relies on United Nations and Eurostat estimates, not on a count made in the same year everywhere.

What is life expectancy in the United States and the UK?

78.9 years in the United States in 2024, with 81.4 for women and 76.5 for men, and 81.4 in the United Kingdom, according to the World Bank. National offices publish their own yearly estimates, so small gaps with this international series are normal.

What does life expectancy at birth actually mean?

It is calculated from that year's death rates at each age, applied to an imaginary generation. It assumes no future improvement. A 60-year-old should therefore not simply subtract their age: having already survived the early decades, they can expect to go past this figure, especially in countries with high mortality among the young.
