Digital nomad visa by country 2026

A digital nomad visa lets you live in a country while working for a foreign employer or foreign clients. The income required runs from about $1,500 a month for Brazil to about $5,791 for Romania, across the 14 visas in this table whose threshold compares as a monthly amount, with the median visa around $3,926 (Malta). Every row comes from a government site, read on 3 November 2026, and conflicts between official pages are flagged: Estonia and Hungary show two figures, Italy and Spain publish no single readable amount, and Malaysia has just raised its threshold. A visa does not erase tax: it authorises a stay, and tax residence follows other rules. The simulator shows which thresholds your income meets, at the latest published exchange rate. Check the latest version with the consulate before you apply.

Nomad visas and tax: what official pages say

Few governments say it as clearly as you might like. Costa Rica writes that digital nomads are exempt from income tax. Malaysia applies a 10% withholding for the first 182 days, then normal taxation. Estonia points out that a stay of over 183 days in 12 months makes you tax resident. Mauritius taxes on a remittance basis. Elsewhere the page says nothing, which does not mean nothing applies.

Your home country has a say as well: leaving does not necessarily end your tax residence there, and your employer may create a permanent establishment. This site's guide to tax residence covers the 183-day rule.

What this table leaves out

Colombia and Iceland are not in it. The Colombian ministry refused our requests, and we use no figure seen in a search excerpt. The Icelandic page on the remote work visa no longer exists at its official address, and no threshold specific to that visa could be read. Application fees, health cover and criminal record rules also vary: income alone does not make the file.

Questions

Which country asks for the lowest income for a nomad visa?

Among those in this table, Brazil and Mauritius, at 1,500 dollars a month, according to their official sites. Mauritius's FAQ seems to date from 2023, however, so check it. Brazil also accepts 18,000 dollars of savings. Thailand sets no income, but a balance of 500,000 baht for its DTV visa.

Does the Portugal digital nomad visa still exist?

Yes according to the Portuguese foreign ministry, read on 3 November 2026, under the heading of remote professional activity. Average income over the last three months must reach four minimum wages, or 3,680 euros a month on the 2026 mainland wage of 920 euros. The residency visa lasts four months, then the permit is requested from AIMA.

Does a nomad visa let you work for a local company?

Generally not: the principle is income from abroad, and Costa Rica and Brazil both write that condition down. A local job generally requires a different permit. Dependants do not always get that right either: Greek law bars them from any economic activity. Read the exact condition on the country's official page.

Do you pay tax on a nomad visa?

Often, yes, somewhere. The length of stay can create local tax residence, and your home country may go on taxing you. A few countries show favourable treatment, such as Costa Rica, but that only holds at their level. For a serious plan, have your case and its tax treaties checked by a professional.
