How we calculate

Monaco levies no income tax on its nationals or on residents, French nationals excepted, and no wealth tax, annual property tax or council tax. The exemption covers only activities carried out and persons genuinely established in the Principality, and the government states that it does not affect rules applied by other states. VAT follows the French base and rate. At €270,000 gross, net falls to €236,780, or 88%; at €450,000, to €405,079, or 90%. On €130,000 the country ranks 5 of 35 for cash in hand, before any special regime. The sums assume: Employee on a Monegasque payroll, living in Monaco, not a French national. On safety, schools and health it scores 77 out of 100 among the countries covered. The page then sets out 3 legal ways to cut the bill, the lack of an open regime for new arrivals and the trap to know before leaving.

Who is tax resident in Monaco?

Staying over three months a year or settling requires a residence permit, and a separate certificate serves for tax formalities abroad. That certificate goes to permit holders who spend more than 183 days in Monaco, have their main activity there, or spend most of the year there. People resident for under six months get one only with documents proving exemption.

The trap to know

Most French nationals who move to Monaco stay taxed in France as if they lived there, on all their income, under article 7-1 of the 1963 convention. They file with the tax office in Menton. Exceptions are narrow, such as people born in Monaco who have lived there ever since, or those married to a Monegasque while habitual residence continues.
