Who is tax resident in New Zealand?
Either more than 183 days in any 12-month period or a permanent place of abode creates residence, whichever comes first, and the status is backdated to the first of those days. Leaving requires both no permanent place of abode and more than 325 days away in a 12-month period.
The trap to know
The FIF rules bite at the end of the exemption, since foreign shares can then produce taxable income even without a sale. Inland Revenue's May 2026 factsheet proposes a $100,000 threshold and wider use of a revenue account method from 1 April 2026; these were proposals when read, so the enacted text decides.
