How we calculate

Tax rates on the 2026 national scale climb from 0% to 24%, which applies above SGD 1,000,000, before contributions and any local tax. Income above S$1 million is taxed at 24% in Singapore, the top resident rate, and foreign-sourced income received by an individual is generally neither taxable nor declared. That second rule has limits: overseas work incidental to a Singapore job stays taxable, and so does work done in Singapore for a foreign employer. All personal reliefs together are capped at S$80,000 a year. At SGD 380,000 gross, net falls to SGD 322,470, or 85%; at SGD 640,000, to SGD 523,880, or 82%. On SGD 190,000 the country ranks 4 of 35 for cash in hand, before any special regime. The sums assume: Foreign employee on an Employment Pass, tax resident (183 days or more): no CPF contribution. On safety, schools and health it scores 79 out of 100 among the countries covered. Further down you will find 3 legal ways to cut the bill, the lack of an open regime for new arrivals and the mistake to avoid when you go.

Who is tax resident in Singapore?

Citizens and permanent residents are resident if they live in Singapore apart from temporary absences. A foreigner qualifies with at least 183 days of stay or work in the previous calendar year, or over three consecutive years even if the first or third falls short, or across a continuous employment spanning two calendar years. Non-resident employees pay the higher of a flat 15% or resident rates, with no personal reliefs.

The trap to know

A foreign employee who resigns, is posted overseas or leaves for more than three months triggers tax clearance: the employer must file Form IR21 at least one month ahead and withhold all money due until IRAS has assessed the income. The clock therefore starts well before the last payslip.
