Richest countries in the world 2025
Monaco is the richest economy in the world on GDP per capita, at $288,002 in 2024, ahead of Liechtenstein ($220,167) and Luxembourg ($147,252), according to the World Bank. Among countries with over a million people, Ireland takes the lead, followed by Switzerland and Singapore. The answer depends on the measure. Nominal GDP converts output at market exchange rates; purchasing power parity (PPP) corrects for local prices, and Singapore then comes first at $163,354. Neither is a salary: GDP includes company profits and says nothing about tax. That is the link with this site. In Ireland, GDP per capita reaches $131,592, yet the OECD average wage leaves $52,387 net. The tool below sets your own net pay against the GDP per capita of the country you choose.

Nominal or purchasing power parity: what is the difference?
Nominal says what a country's output is worth on world markets, which matters to anyone earning in one currency and spending in another. PPP says what it buys locally. The gap reorders the list: the United States ranks 11 on nominal and 12 on PPP, Singapore 8 and 1. PPP data are missing for 7 economies in the table, including Monaco and Liechtenstein.
From GDP per capita to net pay
In the United States, GDP per capita is $90,027 and the average wage $86,977, which leaves $70,018 after tax on our Texas assumption. The case of Ireland shows the limit: multinational profits inflate GDP so much that Ireland's statistics office publishes a corrected measure, GNI*. GDP tells you the wealth produced on a territory, not what an employee keeps of it.

Questions
What is the richest country in the world?
On nominal GDP per capita, Monaco with $288,002 (2024), though it has under 50,000 people. Among countries with over a million people it is Ireland, at $131,592. At purchasing power parity, Singapore leads at $163,354. The answer therefore changes with the measure and the threshold you pick.
Why are Ireland and Luxembourg so high on GDP per capita?
In Ireland, $131,592 per person also reflects multinational profits booked there. In Luxembourg, $147,252 includes output from cross-border workers, who are not in the population it is divided by. In both cases the average wage sits far lower: see the table of average salary by country.
Does a rich country mean better take-home pay?
Not automatically. GDP per capita ignores both distribution and tax. Singapore shows $98,814 with low tax, while other rich countries take far more of the same salary. The calculation above runs your pay through the real tax table of the chosen country so you can check.
