How we calculate

The UAE, Dubai included, has no personal income tax at federal or emirate level, and no capital gains, wealth, inheritance or gift tax on individuals. A natural person's business becomes subject to 9% corporate tax only once turnover passes AED 1 million, with wages and personal investment income left out of that count. Neighbouring Oman is moving the other way, with a 5% personal tax above OMR 42,000 a year starting on 1 January 2028. At AED 1,100,000 gross, net falls to AED 1,100,000, or 100%; at AED 1,800,000, to AED 1,800,000, or 100%. On AED 550,000 the country ranks 3 of 35 for cash in hand, before any special regime. The sums assume: Expatriate employee who is not a GCC national; the same in every emirate. On safety, schools and health it scores 35 out of 100 among the countries covered. The page then sets out 3 legal ways to cut the bill, the lack of an open regime for new arrivals and the trap to know before leaving.

Assumptions: Expatriate employee who is not a GCC national; the same in every emirate. Emirati and other GCC nationals pay pension contributions and are not modelled; the end-of-service gratuity paid by the employer and the tax owed to a home country, such as the United States, are ignored.

Average salary in the UAE and Dubai

We could read no official average salary for the UAE or for Dubai: the federal statistics centre refused our requests, and the amounts quoted elsewhere come from private sites or reports we could not check at the source.

What this site can calculate: in the United Arab Emirates, a salary of AED 367,250 gross, about 100,000 dollars, leaves AED 367,250, or 100% of gross, on the assumptions stated above.

Paying less, legally

Salary outside the tax base

Wages are untaxed and need no registration or return, so there is nothing to deduct against them.

Personal investments and property

Personal investment income and real estate investment income do not count toward the AED 1 million business turnover test.

No social security for non-GCC staff

Foreign employees from outside the GCC pay no social security. Unemployment insurance costs them AED 5 a month on a basic salary up to AED 16,000 and AED 10 above that.

Who is tax resident in the United Arab Emirates?

Cabinet Decision 85 of 2022 offers three routes. A usual residence with the centre of financial and personal interests in the UAE qualifies, as do 183 days of presence in 12 months. So do 90 days for a UAE or GCC national or residence permit holder who also has a permanent home, job or business in the country.

The trap to know

The 90-day route is not an automatic exit from another country's tax net. Any part of a day counts as a full day in the UAE, but a home state applies its own rules on departure and on tie-breakers. In Dubai, the 5% housing fee on residential rental value is also a real annual cost for tenants, one that a zero tax headline tends to hide.

Questions

How much is AED 550,000 after tax in the United Arab Emirates?

AED 550,000 a year, or AED 45,833 a month, for a single resident employee. Income tax comes to AED 0 and contributions to AED 0. At AED 1,100,000, the share you keep moves to 100%. Each month that leaves AED 45,833 of AED 45,833 gross. This amount ignores any scheme for people settling in.

What is the top income tax rate in the United Arab Emirates?

0% on the 2026 scale, above AED 0. At AED 550,000, each extra 1,000 leaves about AED 1,000 net. At AED 1,800,000 gross you would keep 100%. Nobody pays it on all their income, since the lower bands still apply to the first part of the salary.

What gross salary leaves AED 825,000 net a year in the United Arab Emirates?

About AED 825,000 gross a year, or AED 68,750 a month, for a single resident employee, with no special regime taken into account. Tax and contributions then take 0% of gross. A bonus or a benefit in kind can change the gross to negotiate in your contract.

Is the United Arab Emirates safe and expensive to live in?

The public figures on this page show 0.7 homicides per 100,000 people, a housing price level of 102.1 (world = 100) and a mean PISA score of 427. National averages: a district or a school can differ widely. Life expectancy stands at 83.1 years and fine particles at 57.2 µg/m³, as this page details below with its sources.
