How we calculate

Qatar charges no income tax on salaries, wages or allowances, for citizens and residents alike. Its territorial system reaches only Qatar-source income, and commercial or professional profit is taxed at 10%. Net wealth, inheritance, gift and property taxes do not exist, and VAT, though approved in draft, is not yet in force. At QAR 1,100,000 gross, net falls to QAR 1,100,000, or 100%; at QAR 1,800,000, to QAR 1,800,000, or 100%. On QAR 550,000 the country ranks 1 of 35 for cash in hand, before any special regime. The sums assume: Expatriate employee who is not a GCC national; the same across Qatar. On safety, schools and health it scores 36 out of 100 among the countries covered. Next, in order, come 3 legal ways to cut the bill, the lack of an open regime for new arrivals and what to check before you leave.

No tax on holding property or wealth

Owning a home or assets carries no annual property or wealth tax, although registration fees for property and leases can apply.

Who is tax resident in Qatar?

Any one of three conditions makes someone resident under Tax Law No. 11 of 2022: a permanent home in Qatar, more than 183 days in the country in a year, or Qatari nationality. Nationals therefore stay resident even while living abroad.

The trap to know

Exemption does not remove every filing duty. The General Tax Authority's guide states that all taxpayers, even exempt ones, submit a return through Dhareeba, and this covers individuals running an economic activity in Qatar. Tax-free pay also says nothing about the home country, which may keep taxing someone who has not truly left.
