Paying less, legally
Pension contributions

ISAs
Up to £20,000 can go into ISAs in 2026 to 2027.
Lifetime ISA

Salary sacrifice into a pension
Giving up pay for an employer pension contribution currently spares income tax and National Insurance on that slice. From 6 April 2029, only the first £2,000 a year stays free of National Insurance; income tax relief is unchanged.

Who is tax resident in the United Kingdom?
The Statutory Residence Test decides. Spending 183 days in the tax year (6 April to 5 April), having an only home in the UK under set conditions, or working full-time in the UK each makes a person resident, unless an automatic overseas test applies, such as fewer than 16 days in the UK. Between those poles, the number of days is weighed against ties such as work or family.
The trap to know
Inheritance tax now follows long residence. Someone UK resident for 10 of the previous 20 years is a long-term resident with worldwide assets in scope, and that status lasts between 3 and 10 years after departure depending on time spent in the UK.
