Who is tax resident in Norway?
A foreigner becomes resident after more than 183 days in Norway within 12 months, or more than 270 days within 36 months, and part days count. Leaving is much harder: residence continues until a calendar year with no more than 61 days in Norway and no dwelling available to the person or a close relative. Someone resident for at least ten years has to meet those conditions three years running.
The trap to know
Departure can trigger exit tax on latent gains on shares above NOK 3 million, as if sold the day before leaving. Payment can be spread over 12 years without interest, but a move outside the EU/EEA requires collateral, and 70% of any dividend on those shares becomes payable. Because residence itself ends only under strict conditions, a move abroad does not stop Norwegian liability straight away.
